With the special hopes, St. Petersburg awaited a visit from SLC champion Alexei Yagudin together with Tatiana Tarasova’s new student, Andrei Griazev. He can be rightfully called the biggest discovery of these Nationals.

Ice Duels with Plushenko

The skater from Perm was in Professor Alexei Mishin’s school for five years, and for the second season the new talent is nurtured by Tatiana Tarasova. The result – a bronze at Russian Nationals and the ticket to Europeans and Worlds. We can say with the confidence that a new star is shining on Tarasova’s Olympic horizon, and that is probably the last star since after splitting up with her American student Sasha Cohen, Tatiana Tarasova announced that she is not going to coach anymore and she would just consult skaters.

After the Nationals were over, Griazev was with his parents all the time – he only sees them once a year, but during the conversation with the reporter, the parents went to the "background".

What do you think about people calling you the second Yagudin?
Andrei: It’s very pleasant – (he laughs), but it’s a little early.

So who is your coach – Tarasova or Yagudin?
Andrei: Tatiana Anatolievna. Lesha Yagudin did a lot for me. After I left Mishin, I went home, to Perm and decided to quit skating. I didn’t skate for three months. It was Lesha who helped me to go to Tarasova.

For five years you trained in Professor Mishin’s group. Why did you leave?
Andrei: It wasn’t me who left. Alexei Nikolaevich sent me to another coach, his wife Tatiana Nikolaevna. That happened after Jr. Words 2001 where I placed shameful 14th. When I came back, Mishin said, "Andrei, I can’t give you a lot of attention." I think he didn’t want it too much. Last two-three years with Mishin I didn’t feel any special attention. Sometimes Alexei Nikolaevich set up an ice competition between me and Zhenya Plushenko – who will outjump the other one. But in general, I wasn’t even allowed to be on the ice during practice if Plushenko was training.

Do you socialize with Plushenko now?
Andrei: We only say hello and good-bye.

Every skater has something trick up his sleeve: Plushenko has Bielmann spin, Yagudin – footwork sequence, Lambiel – spins. What about you?
Andrei: I will have it. About two years ago I was doing Bielmann spin but my back went out and I decided not to do it for some time. Now I’m trying to restore that spin.

Are you satisfied with Yagudin as a coach?
Andrei: He is very tough. He tells me, "Andryuha, if you won’t do anything now, you are not going home." Of course he is kidding, but that’s what I like about him.

Billiards with Yagudin

What is the atmosphere in Tarasova’s group?
Andrei: Very good. We all live together in one friendly house like one big family. Sveta Kulikova and Vitaly Novikov are my roommates. It’s a lot of fun. It’s hard to learn English in America because we all communicate in Russian and we are mostly surrounded by Russians – skaters and coaches.

How do you spend your free time?
Andrei: I have a hobby – I was doing some woodwork before. I had special tools and I loved to make different boards and little boxes. Now I play computer games, I bowl. We play pools with Leha Yagudin. I love ping-pong – I play at the training camp in Novogorsk. I follow soccer, but I root the most for the basketball team “Ural Great”. Any sport is to my liking – I’m such a sports guy.

Is there is something you don’t limit yourself to?
Andrei: I love to eat! Especially in front of TV. The most amazing is that everyone feeds me and feeds me, and I ‘m still so thin and tiny. (Author's note: With the height of 177 cm Griazev weights 68 kg.)

What’s your favorite meal?
Andrei: I am attracted to any food, I can eat anything. I’m not picky. Tatiana Anatolievna cooks so much for us – borsch, soups...

Can you cook?
Andrei: Yes, when I have nobody to ask to cook for me. Little pancakes, meat ravioli – I make them myself.

How many pairs of skates do you have?
Andrei: Two as of now. I’ll finish this season and I will be breaking in the new ones. The old skates won’t hold on for the third season.

Do you remember your first performance?
Andrei: Yes. It was in Pervouralsk. I was six or seven, and I even got a gift – a vase, the prize from the fans. I liked getting awards and medals. After the victories, we ate ice cream with friends.

Do you have a nickname?
Andrei: My friends in St. Petersburg changed my name to Clean.

Coach's opinion

Tatiana Tarasova:
Griazev is a skater whose love for work is unbelievable. We did a lot together, but there is a ton of work ahead of us. Honestly, I’ve never seen him skate before he came to me. He has some spark inside him, but working hard sometimes does more in our profession than talent alone.
