It was no mistake when Tatiana Tarasova choose to coach 18 year old Andrei Griazev, formerly with Master Mishin. This is becoming a classic scenario. Mishin trains, Tarasva refines. And Alexei Yagudin is also joining the coaching team. It will be most interesting to follow the evolution of this duo; the great teacher and her most illustrious pupil who has now turned to coaching.
In any case, Griazev represents a captivating new challenge. The boy has a perfect skater's physique: not too tall, slender but of good build, excellent speed of rotation, naturally supple joints, a pleasing appearence between that of athlete and dancer. It augurs well. What is most stricking, beyond his "Mishin school" technical skills, is his obvious artistic sense. His movement is naturally pleasing, and he has adapted very well to the choreographic style Tatiana Tarasova has given him. Tarasova has quickly understood how to bring out the best in Griazev. A free programme to variations of Fellini soundtracks, with a Venetian style costume of black velvet with white trim which suited him perfectly. This skater has a power of artistic expression which already puts him up with the greats. Building on his sound technique, with clear potential for progression, it is easy to see the makings of a great champion. Doubtless, with his physique and personality, he will be more of a Kulik (another of Tarasova's prodigies) than a Yagudin.
There is only one cloud on the horizon: inconsistency. Though his Qualifier was brilliant, placing him 4th behind big names like Plushenko, Klimkin and Lindemann, he showed weakness in the short. He actually felt back to 15th place. But when skating in the penultimate group, he moved up to a final 8th. One to following with interest.
