It was a year of achieving goals and learning new lessons. it was also a test in stamina for 2004 World Junior Men's champions Andrei Griazev, who competed in virtually every major junior and senior international competition.

"Psychologically, the Worlds in Germany were much easier for me than the World Junior Championships," he said."The only thing is I lacked a little bit of physical strengh by the end of the season. Otherwise, i felt very well at Worlds."

Indeed, Griazev's schedule included two junior Grand Prix competitions, both of which he won; the junior Grand Prix Final, where he finished second; Russians Nationals, where he placed third in the senior men's competition; Europeans, where he placed eight; the World Junior Championships, which he won; and finally his first World Championships, where he finished 12th.

"Going between junior and senior was not as difficult as I though it was going to be," said Griazev, 19. "But there was not much time between events to get ready and recover."

He said him and his coach Tatiana Tarasova planned his programs to allow simple modification. He performed one additional jump and one additional spin in the extra 30 seconds senior men skate. That, however, did not make for programs fully suited to the upper echelons of the sport.

"The men's level is very hight currently, especially compared with juniors," he said. "We can't even compare these two things."

He has worked with Tarasova and her coaching team for two years. Alexei Yagudin accompanied Griazev to all his Junior Grand Prix competitions. As none of team Tarasova could make the trip to World Juniors, Tarasova asked Elena Vodorezova to accompany him.

"World Juniors was my aim for the season," Griazev said. "Psychologically, physically and artistically we were very well prepared. Luckily, it turned out the way we hoped it going to be."

After Worlds, Griazev returned to the U.S. to plan next year's programs. His goal is to put quad jumps into both the short and long program.
