Yagudin has turned to coaching in Simsbury © Kathleen Bangs

It's a small world in figure skating and testament to that is the fact that nineteen-year old Griazev once trained on the same ice as Yagudin back in Russia when Griazev was just a kid and Yagudin's career was just about to take off with his first world title. Disillusioned two years ago with the coaching situation back home, Griazev was ready to hang it up when Tarasova and Yagudin got a call from his mother, and he arrived in Simsbury shortly thereafter.

Not yet a major star on the world stage, Griazev at practice is not the same skater from even a few months ago. Still a bit shy and awkward off the ice, on it he exudes a new air of confidence and flair missing from last season's programs. Yagudin has increasingly ratcheted up the difficulty of his jumps, footwork, and spins, and Tarasova's artistic influence is now evident right down to the turn of his hand.

Make no mistake: Joubert could be the next Olympic champion, but Griazev could share the podium.

Griazev will compete alongside, and against, Joubert at the first International Grand Prix event of the season, Skate America in late October.
